SmolPC 2.0

A unified offline AI assistant platform for education, designed to run locally, protect user privacy, and support real classroom workflows across writing, coding, image editing, and 3D design.

Abstract

The Problem

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming education, yet access to AI-powered learning tools remains deeply unequal. Most mainstream systems still assume reliable internet access, cloud accounts, and setup steps that are poorly suited to real classroom deployment. As a result, the students and teachers who could benefit most from AI support are often the least able to use it. Schools need software that is private, locally run, easier to deploy, and able to make sensible use of the hardware already available to them, while still supporting the everyday tasks students do across writing, coding, image editing, and 3D design.

Our Solution

SmolPC 2.0 is a free, open-source, fully offline AI assistant suite designed for practical classroom deployment on Windows hardware. It provides one unified application with modes for Code, Writer, Slides, GIMP, and Blender workflows, enabling students and teachers to control educational software through natural language without requiring any internet connection. Powered by locally deployed large language models and hardware-aware runtime selection through technologies including OpenVINO, SmolPC 2.0 is designed to make the best possible use of the device it is running on while keeping data private and local.

Our Impact: Education for All

SmolPC 2.0 demonstrates that powerful AI-assisted education does not have to come with a price tag. Following consultation with teachers through our supervisor, Professor Mohamedally, and a demonstration to the National Autistic Society, feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with educators expressing strong interest in adopting SmolPC 2.0 in their classrooms. SmolPC 2.0 was also showcased at the BETT Conference, one of the world's leading educational technology events, where it was met with enthusiasm from educators and institutions alike. We hope to see SmolPC 2.0 deployed in schools globally, giving every student access to an AI learning assistant that supports them across writing, coding, design, and beyond.
