Future Development
Despite fulfilling all primary requirements we look to future development to open up additional opportunties for the system.
- The current system is centred around London due to our clients requirements, but this could be expanded to include areas beyond the capital. Potential datasets can be found from around the world (the OpenAQ dataset we used is an example) and combining these datasets into a refined schema may prove useful in expanding reaches of the schema.
- The project could be extended to other platforms. Android was selected for this project as this was the easiest platform to develop for and had the widest range of devices for us to test with, but future development could centre around other smartwatches (e.g. Apple Watch) or activity trackers (e.g. FitBit, Withings).
- Considering the large amount of pollution statistics being fed into the current system, the stored API data could also be analysed for patterns which could be useful in pollution research. Analytics can also be utilised by users to find pollution statistics about areas well beyond their current environment.
- Increasing variety of pollutants in also another possibility that could provide a better representation of the users' surroundings. Due to the modular nature of the backend, it would not be too difficult to plug in another dataset to be introduced to the schema.
