AgeTech - Diversibility Café Scheduling for Elderly Users
A Solution to Accessible Café Scheduling
Abstract
Elderly users and individuals with diverse accessibility needs often face challenges when booking and managing time slots with conventional booking systems due to complex digital interfaces, limited assistive features, and inaccessible design elements. Dialogue Café, run by our client Dialogue Hub, is a British Sign Language (BSL) café where customers can order and interact with hearing-impaired baristas using BSL. However, the café currently lacks an accessible website and booking system, making it difficult for customers — especially those with accessibility requirements — to reserve time slots and find key information.
Our solution is a user-friendly website designed to support elderly users and individuals with diverse accessibility needs. It includes a seamless booking system, along with BSL videos showcasing common phrases and menu items, encouraging greater BSL interaction at the café. The platform also offers a screen reader, high-contrast mode, adjustable font sizes, and other settings which aim to further enhance accessibility. Additionally, an AI chatbot assists with bookings, checks time slot availabilites, displays BSL videos, and answer frequently asked questions (FAQs). All core features of the website are fully accessible through the chatbot, allowing users to manage tasks entirely via text or voice input for a more streamlined and inclusive experience.
The inclusiveness of our website has significantly enhanced the experience for individuals with accessibility needs. The integration of BSL videos has improved the ordering process for customers using BSL, while the AI chatbot is successful in completing tasks and answering user queries.
